There were several martyrs named Valentine in early Christian history, and scholars still debate his true identity and the stories surrounding him- One story says that Saint Valentine secretly performed Christian marriages when Roman -Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage for young men, thinking unmarried soldiers would fight better. Saint Valentine’s actions were seen as defying the emperor, and he was eventually arrested, sent to prison, and beheaded.- Some versions of the story say that while in prison, Saint Valentine became close to the jailer's daughter. Before his execution, he is said to have written her a farewell letter, signed "From your Valentine." - Another story says that during his trial, Valentine challenged the judge, Asterius, about the validity of Jesus. Asterius gave Valentine the task of proving Jesus' power by restoring his daughter’s sight. If Valentine succeeded, Asterius would follow through on his promises. Valentine performed the miracle, shocking Asterius. After seeing this, Asterius not only accepted the truth of Jesus but also broke the idols in his home and fasted for three days. Afterward, he and his daughter, along with their entire family and over 40 servants, were baptized.
