Halloween’s name comes from All Hallows’ Eve, a Christian celebration of the saints. In 837 AD, the church moved the date to overlap with the older Samhain festival — because the old celebrations continued even while their meaning had faded. So they were given new meaning, fitting their new beliefs. Centuries later, old games and customs were revived and the occasion commercialised, resulting in the trick-or-treating, costumes, and candy businesses promote for profit today.

WHY DID WE CREATE THIS FOLD-OUT POEM?
While resources have been requested, we also saw a gap. The occasion suits wise and fun storytelling, that is both gentle and not too pointed. This has value in catalysing understanding, trust, interest and conversation. There are histories contrasting darkness with light that churches could beneficially and meaningfully connect with audiences. Many seem to have been unaware.
The fold-out is therefore an education tool for children.
